El receptor Seby Zavala recibió el tiro del cubano Yoán Moncada mientras Cruz corría hacia el plato y comenzaba su deslizamiento a apenas medio metro de home. El intento tardío de deslizamiento de Cruz hizo que se estrellara contra Zavala. Su pierna izquierda se dobló al caer al piso. Cruz pareció sentir mucho dolor al instante, rodando por el suelo y luciendo incapaz de mover la pierna izquierda.
Zavala pareció gritarle a Cruz después de la colisión, lo que provocó que el dominicano Carlos Santana, en respuesta, tuviera palabras para el receptor de los Medias Blancas.
