El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y la Embajada de la República de Sudáfrica en la Habana, Cuba, concurrente en República Dominicana, inauguraron una exhibición sobre “Vida y Época de Nelson Mandela”, que se dejó abierta al público en el Centro de Convenciones de MIREX del 18 al 21 julio de 2023, para conmemorar el Día Internacional de este líder, ganador del Premio Nobel de la Paz.
Con la asistencia de miembros del Cuerpo Diplomático y Consular acreditados en el país, además de funcionarios de este Ministerio y organismos internacionales, el director de Gabinete del MIREX, Juan José Portorreal, dio las palabras de bienvenida a los invitados a esta inauguración; de igual forma, la viceministra de Deportes y Recreación, Artes y Cultura de la República de Sudáfrica, Nocawe Noncedo Mafu, dedicó unas palabras en nombre de su país.
La exhibición muestra la trayectoria de vida de Nelson Mandela, (Madiba), sus inicios en 1942 como abogado y el ejercicio de su liderazgo hasta ser encarcelado en 1963, durante 27 años. Finalmente, su liberación en 1990 y elección como primer presidente democrático de Sudáfrica, en 1994.
Esta presentación estará abierta los días mencionados de 9:00 a.m. a 4:00 p.m. con acceso por la puerta principal de la Cancillería ubicada en la calle Huáscar Tejada, Estancia San Gerónimo.
Esta iniciativa va de la mano con el eje número tres de la política exterior dominicana, ejecutada por el canciller Roberto Álvarez, que trata sobre la promoción de los valores democráticos y el respeto a los derechos humanos consagrados en la Constitución de República Dominicana y en tratados internacionales.
La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, reconociendo los valores de Nelson Mandela, así como su contribución a la cultura de la paz y la libertad proclamó el 18 de julio como “Día Internacional de Nelson Mandela”. Dedicó su vida al servicio de la humanidad a través de su labor en la solución de conflictos interraciales, luchó por la justicia social y la promoción y protección de los derechos humanos, por lo que mereció los más importantes reconocimientos, como el Premio Nobel de la Paz, el cual le fue entregado 1993.
