La oficina del Comisionado de Grandes Ligas (MLB) informó el martes que ha colocado al dominicano Wander Franco en licencia administrativa, mientras sigue investigando las acusaciones contra el torpedero de los Tampa Bay Rays por una supuesta relación inapropiada con una o varias menores de edad.

Según un acuerdo entre MLB y MLBPA, la medida es hasta nuevo aviso mientras MLB continúa con su investigación en curso.’La licencia administrativa, con vigencia inmediata, no representa una medida disciplinaria según la Política Conjunta de Violencia Doméstica, Agresión Sexual y Abuso Infantil. Comentaremos más en el momento apropiado», dijo MLB en declaraciones escritas.

El lunes de la semana pasada, Tampa Bay puso a Franco de 22 años, en lista restringida, un movimiento que permitió al equipo sustituirlo en el roster, mientras el jugador cobraba su salario. El ausencia administrativa, que inicialmente tendrá una duración de siete días, Franco seguirá recibiendo su paga.

MLB inició su investigación contra Franco después de las acusaciones que hizo una muchacha, presumiblemente menor de edad, en las redes sociales. Casi al mismo tiempo, la Procuraduría General de República Dominicana (PGR) informó que contra Franco existe una denuncia desde el 17 de julio, que fue realizada por una joven de 17 años.

Franco, quien batea .281 con 17 jonrones y 30 bases robadas en 112 juegos y lidera a todos los jugadores de posición con 15 carreras salvadas a la defensa, no ha visto acción desde el sábado 12, cuando estalló el escándalo.

Si Franco hubiese impugnado la licencia administrativa, durante la cual se le pagará y acumulará tiempo de servicio, el caso habría pasado a un árbitro neutral, quien decidiría si hay «información creíble» para respaldar las acusaciones en su contra o si la reincorporación de Franco a los Rays «causaría una interrupción significativa» en el equipo.

La MLBPA y el abogado de Franco, Jay Reisinger, se negaron a comentar.

Sin su pelotero más productivo, los Rays ganaron sus series contra los San Francisco Giants (2-1) y Los Angeles Angels (2-1) en la costa oeste, para mejorar su marca a 75-51, a tres juegos de los Baltimore Orioles (77-47) en la División Este, y retener una ventaja de cinco juegos en el primer comodín para los playoffs de la Liga Americana.

El martes, Tampa Bay inicia una estadía de una semana en el Tropicana Field, contra los Colorado Rockies y los New York Yankees.
