ESTADOS UNIDOS.- Un bombero de origen dominicano se ahogó la semana pasada mientras trataba de rescatar a su hija de una corriente de resaca en la costa de Jersey, confirmaron las autoridades este domingo.

La víctima fue identificada como Mark Batista, de 39 años, quien tenía una carrera al servicio de FDNY, murió en la ciudad de Avon by the Sean, en Nueva Jersey, el viernes en la mañana, mientras estaba fuera de servicio, luego de saltar al océano para salvar a su hija adolescente, que estaba atrapada en una corriente de resaca, informó CBS New York, citando a NYPD.

No había salvavidas de servicio en la playa de Avon by the sea, donde Batista se ahogó el viernes.

Las autoridades identificaron originalmente a Batista como residente de Teaneck, pero no habían dado a conocer su nombre.

Por su parte, FDNY confirmó más tarde su identidad en un comunicado obtenido por CBS el pasado domingo, que señaló que se desempeñó como técnico de emergencias médicas y bomberos para el departamento durante 15 años.

“Estamos desconsolados al enterarnos de la muerte del bombero Mark Batista, quien murió el viernes mientras nadaba en la costa de Jersey”, indicó FDNY en el comunicado. “El bombero Batista fue un servidor público dedicado que pasó quince años sirviendo en el FDNY, como paramédico y bombero. Nos unimos a su familia en el duelo por su trágico fallecimiento”.
