NACIONES UNIDAS.- Unos 5,2 millones de haitianos, casi la mitad de la población del país, necesitan ayuda humanitaria urgente, según aseguró este viernes Naciones Unidas, que busca 720 millones de dólares de los donantes para financiar sus operaciones de asistencia este año.

Según la coordinadora humanitaria de la ONU en Haití, Ulrika Richardson, las necesidades en el país han aumentado de forma «dramática» como consecuencia sobre todo de la crisis de seguridad desatada por el avance de bandas armadas, que controlan importantes zonas de la capital y otras áreas.

El número de personas necesitadas de ayuda humanitaria se ha doblado durante los últimos cinco años, destacó Richardson en una rueda de prensa virtual desde Puerto Príncipe.

La responsable de la ONU apuntó que lo más acuciante es dar protección a la población civil amenazada por la violencia de las pandillas, a las que se atribuyen numerosos asesinatos, secuestros y violaciones en grupo que han obligado a muchas familias a huir de sus hogares.

«Esto es parte de la realidad a la que los haitianos se enfrentan cada día. Básicamente el hecho de no poder salir de casa sin pasar miedo constante, no poder llevar a los niños a las escuelas o tener una vida normal», señaló.

Richardson alertó además que la violencia se está expandiendo a zonas más allá de Puerto Príncipe, una tendencia que consideró «muy preocupante».

Entre las consecuencias humanitarias de la crisis, la ONU destaca el hecho de que la mitad de la población se enfrenta ahora a inseguridad alimentaria, un nivel que se ha cuadruplicado desde 2017, y que una cuarta parte de los hogares del país carece de agua potable segura.

En respuesta, Naciones Unidas y sus socios han preparado un plan humanitario de 720 millones de dólares con el que pretenden dar apoyo a 3,2 millones de personas.

El presupuesto de ese plan, que se presentará de forma oficial el próximo 19 de abril, es más del doble que el año pasado.
