El cotizado prospecto dominicano, Elly de la Cruz, necesitó de apenas 15 juegos para lograr algo que ningún otro jugador de los Rojos había podido hacer en los últimos 34 años – batear el ciclo. Ocurrió el viernes por la noche ante los Bravos, cuando el cañonero de 21 años conectó un doble, un jonrón, un sencillo y un triple para completar la proeza en sus primeros cuatro turnos de la jornada.

De esa manera terminó la sequía más larga en Grandes Ligas para un equipo sin batear el ciclo. El último Rojo en hacerlo había sido Eric Davis, quien lo completó el 2 de junio de 1989 en contra de los Padres.

Los Rojos le asignaron el número 44 a De la Cruz como un homenaje a Davis – quien es uno de los directivos actuales del club y uno de los mentores de De la Cruz.

En la parte baja del segundo inning ante AJ Smith-Shawver, y los Rojos abajo 5-0, De la Cruz conectó una línea que salió de su bate a 116.6 mph hacia la pared del jardín derecho-central para un doble. Con dos outs en el tercer capítulo, el quisqueyano hizo contacto con un pitcheo alto, sacando un batazo de 37 grados, para un jonrón de dos carreras por la pradera derecha.

Luego dio un sencillo a bate partido en el quinto episodio ante Collin McHugh, para empujar una rayita más.

En el sexto tramo ante Ben Heller, De la Cruz pegó una línea hacia la brecha del jardín derecho-central y prendió los motores, alcanzando una velocidad de 30.5 pies por segundo hasta llegar a la antesala y completar el ciclo ante un repleto Great American Ball Park que se vino abajo.

De la Cruz se convirtió en el quinto jugador más joven en la historia de Grandes Ligas en batear un ciclo, y el tercero que menos juegos ha necesitado para conseguirlo.
