SANTO DOMINGO.-El conocido hombre de beisbol del Caribe, el boricua Pedro López, será el manager de los Leones del Escogido el próximo torneo de beisbol invernal.
Una fuente de crédito dijo a Listín Diario que la decisión sobre López ya está tomada por la gerencia general del equipo rojo, y que sería dada a conocer en el curso de esta semana.
Luis Rojas es el gerente general del Escogido, con la responsabilidad de este tipo de decisiones. Rojas labora cercanamente con el vicepresidente ejecutivo de los rojos, José Miguel Bonetti, quien tiene a su cargo todo lo relativo a la operatividad en cuanto a conformación del equipo.
Rojas fue anunciado oficialmente como gerente precisamente este lunes, luego que la noticia había sido adelantada la semana pasada. Luis es Coach de tercera base de los Yanquis de Nueva York, y fue responsable de la última corona ganada por el Escogido en el campeonato 2016-17.
López, de 52 años, tiene experiencia de coach y manager en la Liga Dominicana. Fue asistente del manager Fernando Tatis en el campeonato 2018-19, cuando los verdes ganaron su primera corona en 51 años. Repitió en el cargo este pasado campeonato, cuando Tatis regresó al puesto de manager.
López, además, fue manager de los Gigantes del Cibao en el campeonato 2017-18 cuando ganaron la serie regular. Incluso fue electo manager del año por los cronistas jurados del premio de Producciones Dominicanas Apolo.
En el round robin de esa campaña, el equipo de la “Ciudad del Jaya” comenzó con un negativo registro de 1-5 y fue reemplazado en el puesto por Rodney Linares.
Posteriormente, fue nombrado manager de los Tigres del Licey en el campeonato 2019-20, pero no terminó. En un sorpresivo movimiento, el tradicional conjunto lo cesanteo en la fase de semifondo a pesar de que el club tenía foja de 7-8. En su lugar fue nombrado el colombiano Luis –Pipe—Urueta.
El Escogido ha experimentado cambios en la gerencia y el manager luego del pasado torneo. José Gómez fue su gerente durante 4 años seguidos, pero el club nunca llegó a la serie final, provocando descontento a lo interno de la organización y la fanaticada.
El manager del pasado torneo fue Rodney Linares, quien fue suspendido y posteriormente nombrado Ronny Paulino, quien finalizó en el round robin.
