Luis Gil impuso una marca personal con nueve ponches en 5 2/3 entradas para su primera victoria en tres años en las Grandes Ligas y los Yankees de Nueva York aprovecharon los problemas de control de Adam Civale con un quinto episodio de cuatro carreras para vencer el domingo 5-4 a los Rays de Tampa Bay.

Civale regaló tres boletos consecutivos con dos outs en la quinta y luego le permitió un sencillo de dos carreras a Alex Verdugo y un sencillo remolcador a Jose Treviño y el venezolano Oswaldo Cabrera –todos en un lapso de tres lanzamientos– y con lo que Nueva York se fue arriba 5-1. Los Yankees tenían marca de 3-17 con corredores en posición de anotar antes de esa entrada.

Nueva York (15-7) mejoró a 6-1 en series esta temporada.

Gil (1-1) permitió una carrera sucia gracias a su propio error de lanzamiento en un pickoff y en el primero de sus dos balks. En su 11ma apertura en Grandes Ligas, el derecho de 25 años permitió dos hits y repartió dos boletos.

Su anterior victoria fue una blanqueada de seis entradas en su debut ante Baltimore el 3 de agosto del 2021. En mayo del 2022 sufrió un desgarro en el ligamento ulnar colateral con Scranton/Wilkes-Barre de la Triple-A y seis días después se sometió a cirugía Tommy John.

Por los Rays, los cubanos Yandy Díaz de 5-0, Randy Arozarena de 4-0. El dominicano Amed Rosario de 4-2 con una anotada y dos empujadas. El panameño José Caballero de 4-1 con una anotada.

Por los Yankees, el dominicano Juan Soto de 4-0 con una anotada. Los venezolanos Gleyber Torres de 3-1 con una anotada y Oswaldo Cabrera 4-2 con una impulsada.
