El presidente de la República, Luis Abinader, recibió este jueves a la ministra de Relaciones Exteriores y Comercio Exterior de Jamaica, Kamina Johnson Smith, durante un encuentro en el Palacio Nacional.

La visita de Johnson Smith se enmarca en la estrategia del Gobierno del presidente Luis Abinader, de tener un mayor acercamiento con los países del Caribe, contemplada en el plan de su política exterior.

En la reunión también estuvo presente, por parte del Gobierno dominicano, el canciller Roberto Álvarez.

Smith sostuvo el miércoles un encuentro privado con su homólogo y anfitrión, Roberto Álvarez, y ese día encabezó una reunión bilateral ampliada a puertas cerradas.

Sobre Kamina Johnson Smith

La senadora, la honorable Kamina Johnson Smith, es la ministra de Asuntos Exteriores y Comercio Exterior.

Fue reelegida el 7 de septiembre de 2020, por el Partido Laborista de Jamaica en las elecciones generales celebradas el 3 de septiembre de 2020.

La senadora Johnson Smith también fue reelegida Líder de Asuntos Gubernamentales en el Senado, cargo que ocupa desde 2016, simultáneamente con su función como ministra de Relaciones Exteriores.

En particular, la senadora Johnson Smith es la primera ministra de Asuntos Exteriores y Comercio Exterior de Jamaica y la primera nacida después de la independencia de la nación.

Como ministra de Relaciones Exteriores, Johnson Smith ha representado a Jamaica y la región en numerosos foros bilaterales, regionales, hemisféricos e internacionales. Ha reafirmado el compromiso de Jamaica con el multilateralismo y una política exterior basada en principios, asegurando que se lleve a cabo en consonancia con los objetivos de desarrollo nacional de Jamaica y el papel del país como buen ciudadano global.

En cumplimiento de su compromiso de aumentar la influencia y visibilidad de Jamaica, la ministra Johnson Smith, entre otras iniciativas, ha presidido varias reuniones de alto nivel y ha ocupado puestos de liderazgo cruciales.

En su primer año en el cargo (2016 y 2017), presidió el grupo CARIFORUM y, en esa capacidad, lideró la apertura de conversaciones con el Reino Unido sobre los acuerdos comerciales posteriores al Brexit. En 2018, se desempeñó como presidenta del Consejo de ministros de la ACP, presidiendo el proceso que aseguró el mandato de negociación de la ACP para un acuerdo posterior a Cotonú con la UE.

En 2018, Johnson Smith presidió el Consejo de Ministros de Relaciones Exteriores de CARICOM y fue la primera ministra de Relaciones Exteriores de Jamaica invitada a las reuniones del G7 y del G20.

Johnson Smith, abogada de profesión, trabajó anteriormente en la práctica privada y como abogado interno corporativo. Tiene una licenciatura en Francés de la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales (Mona), una licenciatura en Derecho de la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales (Cave Hill) y una maestría en Derecho Comercial de la Escuela de Economía y Política de Londres.
