La Vicepresidenta de la República, Raquel Peña, sostuvo una audiencia privada con el Sumo Pontífice de la Iglesia católica, Su Santidad papa Francisco, a quien solicitó unirse en oración por la salud y el bienestar de todo el pueblo dominicano, la paz mundial y el cese de conflictos que afectan la humanidad.
Durante el encuentro con el líder de la Iglesia católica, la vicemandataria trató temas relacionados con el compromiso que tiene la humanidad de cuidar la casa de todos que es la tierra, con el buen manejo de los recursos naturales y la preservación del medioambiente.
De la misma manera, Peña pidió al papa Francisco unirse a la petición del Presidente Luis Abinader, de que la comunidad internacional acuda al llamado de asistencia y ayuda al pueblo haitiano.
Igualmente, Raquel Peña felicitó al papa Francisco por la manera como él abordó el tema del manejo de la crisis sanitaria ocasionada por el virus del COVID-19, haciendo un llamado a la solidaridad entre los países para un acceso igualitario y equitativo de insumos, medicamentos y vacunas.
Además, Su Santidad y la Vicepresidenta conversaron sobre la actualidad mundial, el papel del cristiano ante las desigualdades sociales y la importancia de vivir la fe con actitud de entrega.
El Sumo Pontífice aprovechó la ocasión para, a través de la vicemandataria, enviar su bendición al pueblo dominicano, junto con la exhortación de trabajar unidos para llevar esperanza a quienes más lo necesitan. Ese fue también el momento en el que Peña entregó una carta al Santo Padre en la que se le reitera la invitación para visitar República Dominicana.
A su llegada a la Ciudad del Vaticano, Peña fue recibida por 105 caballeros de la Cortile di San Dámaso (Patio de San Dámaso), y la Guardia Suiza Pontificia, protocolo utilizado para el recibimiento de dirigentes de alto nivel.
La vicemandataria agradeció al papa Francisco, por la distinción de recibirla y conversar sobre el papel de la diplomacia eclesiástica para garantizar la convivencia mundial en momentos tan difíciles como una guerra.
Luego de la audiencia con Su Santidad, la Vicepresidenta hizo una plegaria por República Dominicana en la capilla Paulina, junto a la delegación oficial.
"Para el creyente, la oración es la vía para entrar en contacto con Dios, sentir su presencia y elevar al cielo nuestras peticiones", indicó.
Se recuerda que, como cabeza de la Iglesia católica, el papa Francisco es símbolo de unidad y comunión, en un apostolado que profesa la justicia social, el servicio a los demás y los valores del evangelio.
De igual manera, la Vicepresidenta se reunió con Su Eminencia, el cardenal Pietro Parolin, secretario de Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano.
Durante su visita a Roma, la vicemandataria también sostuvo un encuentro con el embajador de República Dominicana en Italia, Tony Raful, con quien trató el interés de continuar captando nuevas inversiones procedentes de esa nación.
De igual manera, Peña trató con el embajador de la República Dominicana ante la Organización Mundial de Alimentación (FAO), la realización de proyectos que fortalezcan la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional del país y agradeció la labor de la embajada dominicana ante la Santa Sede, en la persona de Dolores Cedeño, encargada de Negocios.
La vicemandataria saldrá de Roma en un vuelo comercial a las 12:30 p.m. de este viernes y regresará al país la madrugada del sábado 25 de junio por el Aeropuerto Internacional de las Américas José Francisco Peña Gómez.
