EL PORTAVOZ, SAN JUAN.- La Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza de EE.UU. (CBP, en inglés) en Puerto Rico informó este lunes que detuvo a 63 migrantes, 54 dominicanos y 9 haitianos, al buscar ingresar ilegalmente a la isla caribeña.

Según detalló la agencia en un comunicado, agentes marinos de Operaciones Aéreas y Marítimas (AMO) de la CBP y de las Fuerzas Unidas de Acción Rápida de la Policía de Puerto Rico localizaron una embarcación sospechosa moviéndose hacia la costa suroeste del territorio caribeño.

Al intervenir con la nave, los agentes escoltaron la misma hasta la estación de embarcaciones de la AMO en la Base Ramey en Aguadilla (noroeste) para su procesamiento y repatriación.

Allí, contabilizaron que los 54 dominicanos se dividieron en 48 hombres y 6 mujeres, y los haitianos en 8 hombres y una mujer.

«Un viaje en yola es peligroso al abordar una embarcación rústica de madera, que se llena de agua durante el trayecto», alertó Creighton Skeen, director de Operaciones Aéreas y Marítimas en el Caribe del CBP, en el comunicado.

«Estos barcos no aptos para navegar están equipados con un solo motor y normalmente intentan cruzar el mar sobrecargados y sin chalecos salvavidas», enfatizó.

De acuerdo con las autoridades, las personas que se aventuran a cruzar los 130 kilómetros entre Puerto Rico y República Dominicana, a bordo de una embarcación tan rústica e inadecuada, ponen en peligro no sólo sus vidas, sino también las de las fuerzas del orden de ambos países con la misión de rescate.
