La República Dominicana anunció su adhesión a la Alianza Internacional para la Circularidad de la Agroindustria de la Caña de Azúcar Resiliente y Baja en Emisiones de Carbono, iniciativa liderada por Cuba para impulsar el máximo aprovechamiento de la producción de ese renglón.
El anunció se realizó en el evento de lanzamiento de la Alianza, realizado en el pabellón de Cuba, en el marco de la 28ª Conferencia de las Partes de la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas para el Cambio Climático, COP28.
El acto fue encabezado por la ministra de Ciencia, Investigación, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente de Cuba, Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, quien explicó que esta iniciativa promoverá “la bioeconomía y la circularidad en la agroindustria de la caña de azúcar, promoviendo la investigación científica para la sostenibilidad y estandarizando procesos para maximizar el aprovechamiento de toda la producción de caña”.
De su lado, el vicepresidente ejecutivo del Consejo Nacional para el Cambio Climático y Mecanismo de Desarrollo Limpio, Max Puig, explicó que esta alianza es de gran interés para el país, pues permitirá formular políticas para la circularidad de la agroindustria de la caña de azúcar, con bases científicas e indicadores relevantes, así como soluciones para la medición de su vulnerabilidad, su impacto en el clima, la biodiversidad y la contaminación.
“Se trata, además, de lograr compromisos para cerrar las brechas en la sostenibilidad de los ciclos de producción y consumo y fortalecer el desarrollo de capacidades y el intercambio de los conocimientos para la consolidación de la bioeconomía y la circularidad en la cadena de valor de la caña de azúcar”, dijo.
También señaló que esta alianza apoyará la formulación de proyectos, actuando como una plataforma aceleradora de soluciones, para lograr el máximo aprovechamiento de la producción de la caña de azúcar con esquemas financieros innovadores y, además, identificar medidas para incluir la industria de la caña de azúcar en las metas y ambiciones de las Contribuciones Nacionalmente Determinadas, las Estrategias Nacionales sobre Biodiversidad, y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenibles (ODS) de los países miembros.
